Solid Waste Management

While handling the county's solid waste (trash) may not be brain surgery, it is one aspect of county government that is quietly but quickly growing out of budget if not managed and one that you will certainly notice if not fully operational!

Mark worked with solid waste professionals to develop a plan that was presented to the Board of Commissioners in October of 2007. This plan, that needs to be implemented, will eliminate the unsightly and odorous open top trash containers at the county's convenience centers. These open top containers collect rain water and are often exposed to open air for days before being pulled and emptied. By precisely timing the removal of the compactor 40 ton containers shortly before they become full, the need for open top containers disappears. Since the county pays both by the pull and by the ton, the number of pulls can be decreased by up to half because the open top containers are very loosely packed. The savings from this plan alone would save the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
